On 8th May 2001, the plenary meeting of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference approved the statutes of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference, that had been revised to accord with the provision of the motu proprio, "Apostolos Suos", issued by Pope John Paul II on 21st May 1998.
In accordance with the provisions of cann. 451 & 455, these revised statutes were reviewed and approved by the Congregation for Bishops, by virtue of faculties granted to it by Pope John Paul II, and after consulting the Secretariat of State and the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. The decree of recognitio (Prot. N: 774/76) was signed on 28th June 2001 by the Prefect, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, and the Secretary, Archbishop Francesco Monterisi.
As President of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference, I hereby decree that these revised statutes be promulgated by being published in the issue of Australasian Catholic Record for October 2001. The revised statutes will become effective on the Solemnity of Christ the King, 25th November 2001, and from that date will replace the current version of the statues, which was approved on 10th March 1979.
