Dr George Pell appointed Archbishop of Sydney

The following announcement has been issued by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Francesco Canalini in the Apostolic Nunciature on 26th March 2001:

"His Holiness Pope John Paul II has accepted the Resignation of His Eminence Edward Bede Clancy for reasons of age and has appointed as Archbishop of Sydney His Grace Most Reverend George Pell, until now Archbishop of Melbourne. The news will be made public in Rome on Monday 26th March 2001 at 12 noon, Rome Time."

The newly appointed Archbishop of Sydney, the Most Rev Dr George Pell
intends to hold a Press Conference early tomorrow afternoon,
