Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father Greg O’Kelly SJ the Auxiliary Bishop of Adelaide, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ambrose De Paoli announced today in Canberra.
Fr O’Kelly, 64, is currently Headmaster of Saint Ignatius’ College in Adelaide.
Born and raised in Adelaide, Fr O’Kelly entered the Jesuit order in1959 and was ordained a priest in 1972. He is a distinguished figure in Catholic education throughout Australia, having served in leadership roles in Australian Jesuit schools for more than 30 years.
Awarded the Order of Australia for services to education in the 1994 Queen’s birthday honours, Fr O’Kelly is a Fellow of the Australian College of Education.
He is currently a member of the College of Consultors for Archbishop of Adelaide and the Consult for Jesuit Provincial, Australian Province.
Headmaster of Saint Ignatius’ College for the past 12 years, Fr O’Kelly served as Chair of the South Australian Catholic Schools’ Commission from 1979 to 1981 and Chair of the Association of Independent Schools of Australia from 1989 to 1990.
Fr O’Kelly will be ordained bishop of the titular See of Ath Truim, an ancient diocese in Meath, Ireland. |
