Catholic Health Australia is a public non-profit association incorporated in the ACT, representing the interests of Catholic health and aged care agencies.
Catholic Health Australia promotes the Ministry of Health Care as an integral element of the mission of the Catholic Church. It works to fully provide Catholic health care in accordance with Christ's ministry to the sick, the aged and the dying.
This ministry is founded on the dignity of the human person, giving preference to the needy, suffering and disadvantaged. CHA advocates and promotes the broadest adoption of Catholic values, ethical principals and social justice in the delivery of health services.
CHA's membership constitutes 20 public hospitals and 36 private hospitals, and 130 nursing homes and hostels. Any person or organisation in any way involved in, or supportive of, the mission of the Catholic Church in health care is eligible for associate or personal membership.
CHA:
• promotes the interests of Catholic hospital and aged care facilities to governments, bureaucracies, interest groups and the media;
• disseminates the teaching of the Catholic Church on health care;
• focuses the solidarity and witness of Catholics engaged in health care;
• monitors and analyses significant developments and policies in health care;
• identifies and keeps under constant review ethical issues relevant to the ministry of Catholic health care;
• assists in the promotion of the highest standards of service in Catholic health care facilities in their fulfilment of the mission of the Catholic Church;
• initiates and promotes the personal and professional development of staff, in particular, the formation of sound Christian leaders;
• ensures the continuing presence and effective mission of Catholic health care facilities;
• provides a forum for communication of issues of common interest and concern for members;
• provides a resource to both the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference and the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes
