What is NATSICC?
NATSICC is the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council.
Its members are elected by their local communities at State and Territory level. It is a truly representative voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics.

How did NATSICC come to be?
The first national conference of the Aboriginal and Islander Catholic Councils (AICCs) was held in Cairns in January 1989. A 12-member working party was elected at this conference. Encouraged by the Australian Catholic Bishops, the working party met several times over the next three years.
The second national conference held in Adelaide in September 1991 accepted the working party's proposals for the establishment of a national organisation.
The first Council members were appointed and an executive committee elected.
In April 1992 the Catholic Bishops' Conference officially recognised and welcomed the formation of NATSICC as the national representative and consultative body on issues concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the Australian Catholic Church.

What does NATSICC aim to be and do?
NATSICC aims to:
• Advise and inform the Australian Bishops on affairs that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Be an avenue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to voice their views and concerns to the Bishops.
• Promote and celebrate the Catholic identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and encourage and assist them to feel at home in the Catholic Church.
• Encourage, assist and develop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership within the community and the Church.
• Offer a welcoming presence to non-indigenous Catholics to the deeply spiritual aspect of Indigenous culture
• Be a source of knowledge and advice to the non-indigenous Catholic community in regard to issues concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
• Support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their needs and aspirations, and encourage others to support them in their struggle for justice.
Be a national network supporting all aspects of the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
